Trump Admin Gives Update on Using Military to Support ICE in 3 States

By Dan Gooding and Gabe Whisnant
The Department of Defense (DOD) authorized the deployment of roughly 700 military personnel to support U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operations in Florida, Louisiana and Texas, according to a Tuesday press release by the Pentagon.
The troops, who come from various military branches and were deployed last week, will provide logistical, administrative and clerical support at ICE detention facilities. Defense officials said that the service members will not be involved in any direct law enforcement activities.
The deployment aims to bolster ICE's capacity by allowing law enforcement officers to focus on frontline duties, the Pentagon said. The Department of Defense described the effort as part of a broader mission to uphold U.S. sovereignty and territorial security, working in coordination with the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).
The announcement comes just weeks after Trump ordered 4,000 National Guard and 700 U.S. Marines to descend on California in response to looting and unrest following ICE protests.
