CVS pharmacies in Mass. now offer birth control prescriptions
(WPRI) — CVS Health announced Thursday that all of its Massachusetts pharmacies will now offer birth control prescriptions.
This change comes after hormonal contraceptive prescribing was approved as part of the 2024 Massachusetts state budget, signed in August 2023.
How does it work?
No doctor's visit is required for the initial consultation — just walk in.
Patients can request a one-on-one birth control consultation with a pharmacist at any of the nearly 400 CVS pharmacy locations in Massachusetts.
The process begins with a brief health screening form and a blood pressure check. The pharmacist will review the results with the patient to determine if they are eligible for a prescription. If so, the pharmacist will discuss various birth control options and help the patient choose the most appropriate therapy.

Patients 18 and older are eligible for a consultation, but birth control will be prescribed on a case-by-case basis.
CVS pharmacists can prescribe different types of hormonal contraception, such as pills or patches, based on the patient’s screening results and lifestyle.
How much does it cost?
The consultation fee is $39, regardless of whether medication is prescribed. Patients can use HSA or FSA funds to cover this fee.
Medication costs and co-pays will vary depending on the patient's insurance.
Patients will be encouraged to follow up with their doctors for future visits, and CVS can recommend local providers for those without a primary care physician.
