Police: Man arrested after Narragansett beach fight

NARRAGANSETT, R.I. (WPRI) — Officers arrested an 18-year-old North Kingstown man following a fight on a Narragansett beach Wednesday night, according to authorities.
Joshua Adams has been charged with carrying a weapon while under the influence of liquor or drugs and disorderly conduct.
Narragansett Police Chief Sean Corrigan said officers were called to Narragansett Town Beach after security guards alerted them to an argument among teenagers that had escalated into a fight.

Corrigan said that, as the security guards attempted to break up the fight, Adams took off running.
The beach security guards warned the officers that Adams may be armed, according to Corrigan, and to be cautious while chasing him.
Corrigan said a witness also claimed Adams had been yelling and waving a gun around throughout the fight.
Adams was taken into custody following a brief chase, and the weapon he had been carrying turned out to be a BB gun, according to Corrigan.
"Displaying a weapon, real or replica, is an extremely dangerous act," Corrigan said. "Responding police officers often have only a split second to decide if they are facing a lethal threat."
Corrigan applauded the officers for showing restraint and handling the situation appropriately. He also stressed that "alcohol and guns do not mix," and that no one with impaired judgement should be handling a firearm, whether real or replica, with or without a permit.
Narragansett hosted its Fourth of July Celebration at the town beach Wednesday night, though it's unclear if the fight broke out during the festivities.
