Social media influencer Javiera Ortiz died on February 21 after being involved in a speedboat accident on the coast of Chile.
According to local news outlet 24 Horas, Ortiz sustained a number of injuries when a fishing vessel hit her while she was in the water at Rinconada Beach in the coastal town of Cobquecura.
Although the surfer was transferred for emergency medical attention, Ortiz was later confirmed dead. She was 34.
“With deep sorrow, we announce that a surfer has died in an accident on Rinconada de Taucü beach, Cobequecura today,” the community’s local surfing hub, Club de Surf Rinconada de Taucú, said in a statement (originally in Spanish) via Instagram on February 22. “The surfing community and locals are mourning this tragic loss.”

The statement added that authorities “are investigating the exact circumstances of the accident to determine responsibility and prevent future incidents.”
The Chilean surf club reminded followers to be careful in the water and respect safety standards in and around the area.

“In this moment of pain, we send our most sincere condolences to the family and friends of the deceased surfer,” the statement read via translation. “May they find comfort and strength to overcome this difficult situation.”
The post concluded, “The surfing community reaffirms its commitment to water safety and requests that there be better support in entry and exit procedures for boats at sea. May this tragic accident serve as a call for reflection and prevention to avoid future losses.”
Over the years, Ortiz earned a following via social media thanks to her knitting skills and posts about photography and surfing.
In her final social media post before her death, Ortiz documented a weekend trip to Chile where she was able to harvest honey from bees. “Obviously there’s a fabric peeking out there,” she wrote to her 63,000 Instagram followers on February 19. “My Ali Crop Top , a basic knit that is still one of my favorite outfits for the summer.”

Just weeks earlier, Ortiz seemingly confirmed she was planning a wedding when she showcased a free pattern for knitting spirals.

“I always dreamed of having a space with lots of wind spirals for my wedding day,” she wrote via Instagram on February 5, “and that’s how many of my followers are helping me make it happen.”
In a separate social media post, Ortiz explained that the spiral “symbolizes growth, evolution and connection to the universe. It is considered a representation of the continuous flow of energy, and infinite mind expanding, reflecting the cycle of life and constant transformation.”
After Ortiz’s death was confirmed, several followers commented that they were going to learn to make spirals and “do it in your memory.”
