Shisui Uchiha’s Mangekyou Sharingan possessed an extremely powerful ability called the Kotoamatsukami. This Genjutsu differs from others in that the user doesn’t need to look in the eyes of their target to manipulate them. Kotoamatsukami activates as soon as the user can see the target.
This power was first demonstrated in Chapter 524 of the manga and Episode 266 of Naruto Shippuden. Danzo used this to overwhelm Mifune despite his eyes being bandaged. This ability allows the user to manipulate every action of their target. These include voluntary and involuntary actions, which makes this ability terrifying.

The basic anatomy of Kotoamatsukami differs from that of other Genjutsu, which is why it is undeniably one of the most influential Genjutsu in Naruto Shippuden. Other Genjutsu allow the user to trap their target but don’t grant control over their free will and thoughts. This makes Kotoamatsukami a flexible technique that can wreak havoc if used with malicious intent.
This technique can control the target’s mind and make them give up on their thinking ability. Kotoamatsukami can be used for several purposes, such as creating an enemy to sabotage their plans or assassinating someone through self-harm.
This ability is so potent that Shisui Uchiha planned to use it against Fugaku Uchiha during the Uchiha Clan coup d’état. This would have resulted in Fugaku giving up on the rebellion. The fact that Kotoamatsukami could be cast upon one of the strongest Uchiha speaks volumes about the power level of this ability. This technique also helped Itachi to break free from Kabuto’s Edo Tensei.
