Nvidia RTX 5080 to be an upgrade over RTX 4090 but may use more power

A trusted hardware leaker shared some intriguing details in recent updates on Nvidia's next-generation graphics cards. The upcoming GeForce RTX series, codenamed Blackwell, is anticipated to have a higher power consumption, sparking widespread speculation within the community.
Kopite7kimi has confirmed what the leaker believes to be the power consumption figures of two RTX 50 series graphics, putting to rest much of the debate and uncertainty surrounding the initial release of information. It has been confirmed that the flagship model, identified as RTX 5090, could potentially consume up to 600W (150W more than the RTX 4090), while the RTX 5080 is expected to operate at around 400W (80W more than the RTX 4080).

It remains unclear whether the term “power consumption” refers to TDP (Thermal Design Power) or TGP (Total Graphics Power). In the past, similar rumours surrounding the RTX 4090's TDP were eventually attributed to TGP instead. As such, these values could be TGP too.
In a separate report from Kopite7kimi shared by VideoCardz, the leaker claimed that Nvidia's performance target for the RTX 5080 is to be 10% faster than the RTX 4090. However, further details on whether this increase relates to overall, raster, or ray-tracing performance are still pending clarification. Looking ahead, the RTX 50 series is slated for a potential release by the end of this year, with some rumours hinting at a possible delay in the actual launch date, potentially extending into 2025.

KitGuru says: Considering the current xx80 card usually performs at least as well as the previous xx90, seeing something similar happening with the RTX 50 series wouldn't be a complete surprise. The post Nvidia RTX 5080 to be an upgrade over RTX 4090 but may use more power first appeared on KitGuru.
