Buttonwood Park Zoo celebrates first-ever litter of Canada lynx kittens
NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (WPRI) — Buttonwood Park Zoo (BPZOO) welcomed two Canada lynx kittens for the first time in its history.
The kittens were born on May 4 to first-time parents 11-year-old Sylvie and 13-year-old Hutch.
Canada lynx kittens are born covered in fur with their eyes and ears closed until they reach about two weeks old, according to the zoo.

The male and female kittens remained with their parents before being released to explore the habitat.
"Both kittens are healthy, very curious, and great climbers," BPZOO veterinarian Dr. Emmy Budas said. "Their personalities were on full display during the exam, with the female showing her sweet and gentle side, while her brother was full of spunk and not afraid to speak his mind."

Sylvie arrived at BPZOO in 2014 on a breeding recommendation from the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) Species Survival Plan (SSP).
The goal of SSP is to manage lynx populations within AZA to ensure a healthy and genetically diverse population, according to the zoo.
There are currently 65 Canada lynx residing in 28 AZA institutions, including four at BOZOO.

This was not the first birth at BPZOO this season, as the park announced three baby beavers earlier this month.
