When and why did Taye Diggs leave All American?
Taye Diggs left All American in Season 5. His exit was after his character Billy Baker was killed on the show.
Diggs essayed the role of Billy Baker, who was a football coach at the Beverly Hills High School. However, he later transferred to South Crenshaw High, where he encountered and recruited Spencer James (played by Daniel Ezra), a rising football genius. However, Billy Baker met an abrupt end on the show as he died trying to save a student in Season 5.
Talking about his decision to leave the show with TVLine, Taye Diggs shared, “I was having a great time. It was just a feeling that I got, and I just honored that feeling. It was maybe mid-fourth season.” He revealed he was close with the showrunner and that his exit was amicable. Diggs said, “And we decided how to go about it, and storylines and whatnot, so it was all above board.”
Will Taye Diggs return as Billy Baker in Season 7?
Taye Diggs’ return as Billy Baker in All American Season 7 is uncertain as of writing.
However, the possibility of the character returning in future episodes cannot be fully ruled out. Billy’s death in Season 5 was depicted as the perfect conclusion to his storyline. Besides, Taye Diggs guest starred in Season 6, so Billy was again seen in the form of flashback moments in Episode 8.
While this seemed to be Billy’s last appearance on the show, creator Nkechi Okoro Carroll indicated otherwise. In the aforementioned TVLine interview, she stated the importance of the character in All American. Carroll also shared that Billy Baker could return if the storyline required it.
Carroll said, “He’s always welcome back and was the first person to be like, “I will happily come back whenever you want me to.” If there are organic moments, and when there are moments that it feels right for Billy to return, that is absolutely something that both Taye and the show would love to make happen. We’re not closing the door on anything or anyone,” the showrunner added.
Presently, neither Taye Diggs nor the makers have announced anything about Billy Baker returning in All American Season 7. Nevertheless, it can only happen if both parties ever change their decision.
