Live Updates: Tennessee eyes series sweep of South Carolina to cap regular season
Tennessee and South Carolina are set to conclude the 2024 regular season with game three of the Southeastern Conference series from Lindsey Nelson Stadum on Saturday at 1 o’clock eastern time.
The top-ranked Vols (45-10, 21-8 SEC) clinched the series win, their ninth-straight, on Friday with the 8-3 game two victory. The Gamecocks (33-20, 13-16 SEC) still need at least one win to have a shot of making regional play, so there’s a lot to play for in this one.
Senior lefty Zander Sechrist (1-1, 4.57 ERA) will make the start for Tennessee while righty Eli Jones (3-4, 5.37 ERA) will pitch first for South Carolina.
Tennessee is playing Saturday for a share of the SEC regular season title with Kentucky. For that to happen, the Vols need a win over South Carolina and Kentucky needs to lose to Vanderbilt. If that were to transpire, the two teams would be co-champions of the SEC regular season but the Vols would own the tiebreaker for the No. 1 seed in the SEC Tournament.
So, the Vols could be as high as the No. 1 seed in the SEC Tournament or the No. 3 seed. The top-two seeds for the SEC Tournament comes from the winners of each division, so even if the Vols finish with a higher record than Arkansas/A&M, the team from the West would get the No. 2 seed.
