Warriors planning to bring back Kevon Looney, fully guarantee his contract for 2024-25

Some other quick buzz: Kevon Looney, drafted in 2015, has been a member of the Warriors for nearly nine years. It appears that his tenure will continue into next week. Only $3 million of Looney’s $8 million is currently guaranteed for next season. The other $5 million guarantees on Monday, presenting the possibility he could be released. But that isn’t the Warriors’ current plan, according to league sources. They are expected to let the rest of Looney’s $8 million contract guarantee, keeping him in their current plans, though it does remain possible they eventually use his salary to help complete an offseason trade.Source: New York Times

Also within this: All signs point to the Warriors retaining Kevon Looney past his guarantee date on Monday, keeping him at $8 million for next season, per sources. Always possible he could be part of offseason trade, but outright release is unlikely. nytimes.com/athletic/55835… – 1:41 PM

More on this storyline

Draymond Green on Kevon Looney: “The most professional teammate I’ve ever had in my life. Not NBA, not college, not high school.” Kevon Looney: “You’re the reason I ain’t never late, right? First day of my training camp, I’m on crutches. I pull up to practice at like 10:30, it starts at 11. I can’t walk, I can’t even get on the court. I’m not even rehabbing at the facility. I gotta go somewhere else to rehab. He comes in sweating in the locker room. ‘You just now getting here?’ I’m like, ‘Yeah, I can’t do anything.’ ‘Be here at 8:30 tomorrow.’ Ever since then, I’ve been there at 8:30 every day. I ain’t never late just because he told me so.” -via YouTube / June 11, 2024

Kevon Looney: “I don’t have full control over my destiny, so I kind of gotta play the waiting game, control what I can control. I’ve been here my whole career. I don’t know anything else, so you know, you always want to finish what you started and be somewhere for the whole career, but I’ve been in this business long enough. I know that’s not realistic, so I’m preparing myself for whatever. My family’s out here. The Bay’s been great to me. They treat me like family. I grew up here, so I haven’t really thought about too far. I’m trying to see what they’re going to do first before I really push the envelope, see what I want to do. Right now, I’m just focusing on my game.” -via YouTube / June 11, 2024

On a recent episode of the Warriors Plus Minus podcast, Tim Kawakami of The Athletic said that he thinks the Dubs are going to let veteran big man Kevon Looney go to save some money. “I think the likeliest situation is that he’s cut, and he makes $3 million from them, and he’s off looking for another spot,” Kawakami said. Looney played just 16 minutes per game this past season, which is the least amount go minutes that he has played since the 2019-20 season. -via athlonsports.com / June 10, 2024
