Viewers are wondering whether the animated sitcom American Dad (or American Dad!) has been canceled or if there are more seasons in the pipeline. Created by Seth MacFarlane, Mike Barker, and Matt Weitzman, American Dad tells the absurd, surreal, and non-sequential story of the Smiths, an upper-middle-class family residing in Virginia. The series originally premiered on Fox on February 6, 2005, before shifting to TBS in 2014. According to reports, TBS renewed American Dad for seasons 20 and 21 in December 2021. Season 20 originally ran for 22 episodes from March 27, 2023, to December 18, 2023.
Will there be more seasons of American Dad?
Yes, there will be at least one more season of American Dad.
As mentioned above, the network has reportedly green-lit the twenty-first season of American Dad, so it’s safe to speculate that a new season will come out in the future.
However, it’s unclear if the show will continue beyond that. In April 2022, Variety reported that TBS would stop making scripted content under its new parent company, Warner Bros. Discovery, as part of its cost-cutting efforts. American Dad was one of the four remaining shows on the network at the time. The others were Chad, Miracle Workers, and The Last OG, all of which have since been canceled. Among them, Chad received another season on the Roku Channel before its cancellation. As of May 2024, American Dad appears to be the only scripted series on TBS.
Additionally, in May last year, following the onset of the WGA strike, Seth MacFarlane and the showrunners left American Dad’s writing room. This departure was supposed to be temporary. The strike ended in September 2023, but there is no confirmed report of their return. Considering that a new season of American Dad has premiered in the first quarter of every year since 2019, the abovementioned reasons probably explain the delay in the release of season 21.
