With criminal charges pending, Iowa chiropractor continues to practice

Iowa's licensing boards are overseen by the Iowa Department of Inspections, Appeals and Licensing. (Photo by Getty Images) State licensing officials have yet to file disciplinary charges against a chiropractor who allegedly admitted fabricating patient records as part of an insurance-fraud scheme.
Theodore Liautaud, a Marion County chiropractor who owns and currently practices at The Chiropractic Hut in Pleasantville, was criminally charged in April with felony insurance fraud, tampering with records and third-degree theft.

According to police, between January 2020 and January 2024, Liautaud collected insurance-provider information and personal information from at least six patients in order to submit fraudulent insurance claims.
A police report states that during an interview with law enforcement officials, Liautaud admitted to using the information from approximately 20 patients to create fraudulent medical records, but, according to police, he did not identify all of those patients for authorities.
Police allege the fraudulent medical records were then used by Liautaud to file with insurance companies fraudulent claims for payment.
Liautaud has pleaded not guilty in the case. After four continuances in the case, a pretrial conference originally planned for June 13 was recently rescheduled for Oct. 3.
State records indicate Liautaud’s license with the Iowa Board of Chiropractic remains in good standing with no record of any disciplinary action. Liautaud declined to comment on the case when contacted Thursday at The Chiropractic Hut.
