Patrick Mahomes issues blunt verdict on Shedeur Sanders' humiliating NFL Draft slide

By ISABEL BALDWIN

Patrick Mahomes weighed in - albeit briefly - on fellow quarterback Shedeur Sanders' shocking slide in the NFL Draft.

Sanders, who had once been pegged as a nailed-on top-five pick in this year's draft, found himself suffering through the unthinkable Friday night.

The 23-year-old endured a draft nightmare as not only was he passed on in all 32 picks of Thursday's first round but he continued to plummet out of both the second and third rounds the following day.

To add insult to injury, Sanders had to listen to five quarterback's names be read out before his own, with the likes of the New York Giants and Cleveland Browns snubbing him in brutal fashion.

The humiliating slide has left fans, analysts and even current NFL head coaches alike baffled with Mahomes leading the shocked reactions.

After Dillon Gabriel, the quarterback out of Oregon, became the fifth quarterback to be selected ahead of Sanders, the three-time Super Bowl champion took to social media.

'Crazy,' the Kansas City Chiefs star posted on X, formerly known as Twitter. The response was extremely short, but it mirrored many reactions from around the league, including a particularly explosive one from Skip Bayless.

'HOW COULD TOM BRADY'S TEAM PASS ON SHEDEUR AGAIN AND AGAIN AND AGAIN??? BRADY REPORTEDLY COACHED SHEDEUR. BRADY REPORTEDLY WAS INVOLVED IN RAIDERS DRAFT DECISION-MAKING,' the sports analyst raged online.

Just months ago, Sanders was projected to be one of the first three players selected. Now, he hasn't even been picked in the first three rounds as he watched Friday night as his name plummeted like a boulder off a sheer cliff as 102 names passed him by.

Now, at best, Sanders will be the sixth quarterback taken off the board in the draft when the process reaches its conclusion on Saturday afternoon.

Entering Friday night, many expected Sanders to be taken with the first pick of the second round by the Cleveland Browns. Instead, the Browns passed on him at picks 33 and 36.

Then, in a complete shock, the New Orleans Saints selected Louisville quarterback Tyler Shough with the 40th pick.

No other quarterbacks were taken in the rest of the second round, leaving draft analysts confounded by how far Sanders had fallen.

Then came the chaos of the third round. With the 28th pick of the round and the 92nd pick overall, the Seattle Seahawks chose Alabama's Jalen Milroe in a stunner.

But then two picks later, in perhaps the most staggering development of the night, the Browns took a quarterback by selecting Oregon gunslinger Dillon Gabriel.

Gabriel had been projected by ESPN's Mel Kiper as the eighth best quarterback in the draft class - making this an absolutely mindboggling decision.

So now, as the number of teams in need of a quarterback start to get whittled down, Sanders' best hope of being drafted could lie with a team that won't play him next year.

The only remaining team without a solidified quarterback situation is the Pittsburgh Steelers, who have now passed on Sanders twice.
