Ubisoft cancels The Division Heartland after three years of development
The Division Heartland was first announced in 2021, serving as a free to play spin-off to grow the franchise. While the game has had several playtests and even an extensive rework, it missed several potential launch windows. Now, Ubisoft has officially cancelled the project.
Ubisoft has confirmed that The Division Heartland is cancelled. In a statement to Insider Gaming, a spokesperson confirmed that the company made “the tough call to halt development”, but layoffs are not expected to follow. Instead, the team at Red Storm Entertainment will be transitioning to other projects, like XDefiant and Rainbow Six.
The news follows on from Ubisoft’s most recent quarterly earnings report, in which executives announced plans to practice “increased selectivity of its investments”. Tom Henderson had previously reported that The Division Heartland failed to “resonate with players” over the course of several playtests.
While The Division Heartland is no more, Ubisoft is still planning The Division 3, a new mainline entry into the series.
